Frederick Martin, The Life of John Clare. Tutis Digital Publishing Private Ltd., 2008. Paperback, 240 pages. Complete and Unabridged. ISBN 8132040095Those who are passionate about John Clare, and it's hard to imagine anyone who has read his poetry not being passionate about him, will enjoy this fictionalized biography of Clare that was first published in 1865.
A recent biographer, Jonathan Bate, has pointed out that its author, Frederick Martin, has added much "colorful narrative embroidery" to his fictional account of Clare's life. This is certainly true, but we ought to keep in mind the point (made by one of Clare's editors, Geoffrey Grigson) that Martin's "novelized chapters often had behind them facts and documents now lost". Some of Bate's "embroidery", in other words, may well be based on fact though we will now probably never know.
One such bit of possible "embroidery" that is not found in the standard modern biographies occurs when Clare, as a little child, after failing to reach the horizon where he thought to find the world's end and getting lost on his way home, "sank down from sheer exhaustion, hungry and thirsty, and utterly perplexed as to where he should go. Some labourers in the fields, commiserating the forlorn little wanderer, gave him a crust of bread, and started him on his home journey" (p.4). Did this touching act of kindness actually occur? We don't know, but it would be nice to think that it did.
The present book is not a facsimile reprint but is a completely reset text of the first edition, sturdily bound and well-printed in a large clear readable font on excellent paper. Tutis Digital Publishing is to be congratulated on having given us a quality product, a print-on-demand book that provides such a striking contrast to the shoddy products being inflicted on us by so many publishers today.
Strongly recommended to all lovers of Clare who should check out my Listmania List 'Make John Clare the greatest poetic discovery of your life!' for other Clare books.
